Walkiddy debuted our sustainable denim collection for the first time in the SS21 season, making us one of the few brands producing sustainable denim for children’s clothing. We’ve since refined our denim production process, and we’re excited to present our AW22–23 collection, featuring a variety of denim options in different colors and styles for kids. Before we unveil the Walkiddy AW22–23 denim line, we’d like to discuss the environmental impact of traditional denim and share some helpful information about sustainable denim’s definition and significance.

The production of denim has far-reaching effects on the environment and the workers involved.

While jeans are a popular clothing item, it is important to be aware of the impact that their production can have. By educating ourselves on the environmental and social impact of denim, we can make more conscious decisions about the clothing we choose to wear.

The production of denim requires a significant amount of water,

which is a crucial resource for cotton cultivation. On average, a single pair of jeans can consume 2,000 to 3,000 gallons of water [1], used for growing cotton, dyeing, and washing denim. Unfortunately, traditional denim production also contributes to water pollution by releasing harmful chemicals and dyes into nearby water sources.

The production of denim using traditional methods necessitates the use of substantial amounts of chemicals.

The growth of cotton necessitates the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, while chemicals are used in the dyeing and finishing process. These chemicals pose a threat to the environment as well as to workers who may be exposed to them.

The Environmental Impact of Denim Dyeing

Denim dyeing is a highly polluting process that contributes significantly to the environmental impact of traditional denim production. Synthetic dyes are commonly used in the dyeing process, and they release harmful chemicals and toxins into the environment, which can be detrimental to local water sources, wildlife, and communities. Moreover, the process also requires a significant amount of water and energy, which further contributes to environmental degradation.

The distressing technique of sandblasting denim is a hazardous process that poses health risks to workers.

Fine sand particles used in sandblasting can cause respiratory problems, and therefore many countries have banned this practice. However, some denim factories still use sandblasting to create a worn or faded look on jeans, putting workers’ health at risk.

In addition to its environmental impact,

Traditional denim production is also associated with exploitative labor practices. Many denim factories pay low wages and do not provide safe working conditions for their employees. This can result in poverty, health issues, and social inequality for workers and their communities.

Sustainable denim refers to a type of denim that is manufactured using eco-friendly and socially responsible practices.

This involves the use of organic cotton, minimizing water usage, and implementing fair labor standards. Sustainable denim production aims to ensure that denim is produced in a way that is both environmentally safe and socially responsible, without compromising the well-being of workers involved in the process.

There are several reasons why sustainable denim production is important.

Firstly, traditional denim production is known for its high environmental impact. It requires a significant amount of water and chemicals, and the dyeing process can lead to the release of harmful toxins. In contrast, sustainable denim production is focused on reducing its environmental impact by using organic cotton and implementing water-saving technologies. In addition to its environmental benefits, sustainable denim production also prioritizes fair labor practices. Many denim factories have been criticized for their use of exploitative labor practices, which can result in poor working conditions and low wages. By supporting sustainable denim production, consumers can contribute to the improvement of the lives of the workers involved in its production. Overall, sustainable denim production is essential for creating a more environmentally and socially responsible fashion industry.

Introducing Walkiddy’s sustainable denim collection, which aims to raise awareness about the harmful impact of denim production on the environment. As a company, Walkiddy values environmental sustainability and fair labor practices, which is reflected in our GOTS certification. For our denim collection, we have carefully chosen methods to minimize the use of chemicals and water in production.

Working with EIM certified companies, we have implemented a washing system that utilizes ozone and enzymes.

Our AW22–23 Denim Collection offers a variety of models, including jackets, skirts, leggings, pants, dresses, dungarees, and loose pants, all made with sustainable denim. These designs provide comfort and freedom of movement for kids with color options like blue, rose pink, and black.
