We all want a bright future for our children, where they can grow up in a healthy environment and be happy. However, our choices as consumers can have a significant impact on their future. Choosing sustainable clothing for our kids is an essential step towards creating a better future for both them and our planet.

Sustainable fashion for kids is a part of the larger sustainable fashion movement, which aims to minimize the negative effects of fast fashion. Although the fashion industry is one of the most developed sectors globally, it is also one of the most damaging to the environment. Fashion contributes to approximately 8% of all global carbon emissions and 20% of industrial wastewater, and it’s expected to cause a 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Fast fashion, which involves copying the latest trends and designs into mass production at low costs, is one of the leading causes of environmental damage in the fashion industry. Fast fashion brands aim to maximize their profits by using labor, capital, and natural resources to their fullest potential. They launch new collections almost every seven days and offer discounts to increase consumption. This approach leads to negative effects such as:

  • Water consumption: The fashion industry consumes 79 trillion liters of water annually and contributes to about 20% of industrial wastewater. Cotton is one of the main contributors to this consumption. It takes 10,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram of cotton, which means about 2,700 liters of water are used to make a cotton t-shirt. Choosing organic cotton reduces this water consumption by approximately 91%.
  • Textile waste: 92 million tons of textile waste are generated every year due to fast fashion and ever-changing trends. Clothes that are out of fashion and cannot be sold during the season are destroyed. Adopting a controlled production approach by brands and recycling unused or out-of-season clothing can be an effective way to prevent this waste.
  • Carbon emissions: The clothing industry ranks second in carbon emissions after petroleum. From the production of cotton to the delivery of the final product to the store, it takes approximately 3,781 liters of water to make one pair of jeans. This equates to approximately 33.4 kilograms of carbon emissions.
  • Unfair working conditions: Around 75 million workers worldwide work for the fast fashion industry. These workers are generally chosen from developing countries and are employed for very low wages, long working hours, and unhealthy conditions.

On the other hand, sustainable fashion aims to minimize these environmental and social damages caused by fast fashion by adopting concepts such as fairness, sustainability, and recycling at every stage from production to marketing and distribution. Sustainable fashion brands aim to reverse the damages of fast fashion by following strategies such as using organic materials, creating fair working conditions, and avoiding plastic packaging.

Sustainable fashion for kids follows the ethical understanding of sustainable fashion by using organic materials, creating fair working conditions, and consciously using the resources of our planet. As a GOTS-certified brand, we understand the importance of sustainability in fashion. We prefer organic cotton to avoid artificial pesticides and fertilizers used in cotton production, which can contaminate the environment and affect farmers’ health. Organic cotton greatly reduces water consumption, energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and soil erosion.

In addition to using organic cotton, we aim to become a sustainable fashion brand for kids by creating fair and safe working conditions for our employees, developing environment and human-oriented social responsibility projects, and preventing overproduction by working with pre-orders. Sustainability is the key to creating a good future for our kids, and it is up to us to support it.
